Implementation of a high reliable chirp underwater acoustic modem

With the increase of applications on underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSN), reliability of underwater communication (UWC) has become increasingly demanding. In this paper, a new underwater acoustic modem prototype design based M-ary different chirp spread signals (MCSS) is presented. Through sea test, it is verified that under low SNR shallow water environment, the modem can achieve error-free communication at distance of 212m with data rate of 300 bps, and the transmission power consumption is no more than 0.97 W. From these observations, it might be utilized for the wide applications based on underwater acoustic communication.
