General Constraints on Process Models of Language Comprehension

It is suggested that psychological research on language has adopted peculiar priorities by extrapolating from structural linguistics, rather than specifying general theories of cognition and communication to fit the issues of language processing. A framework is presented that situates text processing in such general human constraints as resources, memory, and linear capacities. A set of questions for future research is drawn from this foundation.
