Editorial comments on the short note by Barry Jay

The paper by Barry Jay is an unusual one not just because it is very short but, as one of the reviewers notes, it does not make a new contribution. However, despite this observation (which this editor agrees with), it seems that the question of expressive power of the λ-calculus has been the source of confusion. Though experts (such as the reviewer) express surprise that there is such confusion it seems to the editors that there is indeed confusion in the community and the note by Barry Jay will help clarify it. In this editor’s opinion, journals can serve as the focal point of discussion as well as disseminating new results. I thank the editor-in-chief for being flexible enough to accommodate my perhaps eccentric view.
