Wikipedia in Virtual Reality and HowText-based Media can be Explore in Virtual Reality

This paper discusses the first prototype of Wikipedia VR. It discusses the challenges surrounding building a text-based media application in virtual reality such as eye strain issues and focuses on the creation of an environment that can parse existing web content for consumption within 3D space. Wikipedia is used as the basis for design of a program that can parse and display long form written content for perusal and manipulation within an interactive environment. Results of research have shown that limitations of current generation virtual reality hardware may render them unsuitable to text-based applications. The paper also discusses future uses of Mobile VR HMD such as the VIVE Focus and OCULUS Quest which offer higher resolutions that could allow a user to comfortable use Virtual Reality for reading text-based media. The paper demonstrates how Text-based media can be displayed in a new and innovative form in Virtual Reality.
