Controlled OFDM Measurements at Extreme Velocities

LTE is designed to work at velocities exceeding 400 km/h. Measuring the physical layer performance that can be achieved at such high speeds in real-world scenarios is conceptually straightforward when using off-the-shelf test equipment in drive-by measurements. However, such measurements are not well suited to directly compare, for example, the bit error ratio of OFDM transmissions at different velocities, signal-to-noise ratios, or pilot power levels, as the channels are neither repeatable nor controllable. In this paper we present a controlled measurement setup that delivers such high-speed channels while avoiding largescale shadowing. We use the setup to focus on the effect of a single parameter on a transmission in a multipath smallscale fading environment with large Doppler spread. In this paper, we present measurements of LTE-like OFDM signals while changing the parameters velocity, signal-to-noise ratio, and pilot power.
