An Objective SIMTOOL in FMS

A simulation model ‘Objective SIMTOOL’ is developed to monitor the working of a cutting tool at a machining centre in an FMS environment to find number of tool replacements due to the effect of important parameters of tool viz., life, wear, temperature and breakage. Unlike previous models the SIMTOOL considered both part and volume flexibilities with combination of turning, drilling, taping etc., normally performed on a job. The simulation output shows that most of the time, the tool fails before its predetermined life due to either wear or temperature or breakage or combination. This necessiates the tool monitoring to find realistic number of tool replacements for a job and whenever a part variety or volume changes for an effective Tool Requirement Planning.
