A new property of distributions of the heights of wind-generated waves

Abstract A special dimensionless variable β related to the wave height has the same asymptotic distribution in Gaussian sea states with a very large variety of bandwidth and spectrum shape. This property of β is confirmed from an analysis of more than 10 million wind-generated waves recorded in the sea area of the NOEL laboratory off the east coast of the Straits of Messina.
