MEASUREMENT OF CRACK DISTRIBUTION IN A ROCK MASS FROM OBSERVATION OF ITS SURFACES

ABSTRACT The anisotropy of the crack distribution in a rock mass is characterized by what is termed the “fabric tensor,” and its geometrical interpretation is given. A practical procedure is presented to determine the internal crack distribution by observing cross-sections of cracks that appear on plane surfaces of the material by means of the stereological principle. Only three types of surfaces are necessary for observation.
