Mobile multimedia services via DAB: DMB

The article studies different aspects of a system based on DAB which allows the transmission of multimedia services such as MPEG coded video-sequences or JPEG coded still-images for mobile/portable receivers. By adapting both, the DAB and MPEG multiplexing formats and by considering an outer Reed-Solomon code and a convolutional interleaver, the total data rate will be about 1.2-1.4 Mbps. For a signal-to-noise-ratio of the order of E/sub s//N/sub 0/=14 dB, one can transmit up to 1.182 Mbps data rate (audio+video+data) by guaranteeing a BER /spl les/10/sup -8/. The system can be used for instance for broadcasting one or more MPEG video coded streams, one stereo audio program, and several low rate data-channels of 8 kbps.
