Optimal Design of a SVC Controller Using a Small Population Based PSO

Static Var Compensator (SVC) is a shunt Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) device. The primary purpose of a SVC is voltage control. In this paper, Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm with a small population is used for the design of an optimal SVC controller that can provide better voltage control. Optimal SVC PI controller parameters are determined for a two-area power system subjected to small and large disturbances. Results are presented to show that the SPPSO algorithm based SVC PI controller minimizes the voltage deviations at the point of common coupling from the set reference level during dynamic and transient conditions.
