Inoculation of Lolium rigidum with Clavibacter sp., the toxigenic bacteria associated with annual ryegrass toxicity

A series of experiments was undertaken to induce the development of Clavibacter sp. in Lolium rigidum with both cultured and field sources of bacterial inoculum by artificial inoculation and inoculation in association with the vector nematode Anguina funesta. Bacterial colonization of the host was reliably achieved only with a bacterial inoculum from the field in conjunction with A.funesta. Although in a few instances bacterial gummosis in the host was observed when it was artificially inoculated with cultured bacteria, these bacteria no longer appeared to be pathogenic
