Efficient multiple memory control method for image data processing

Hardware and software co-design methods, which are widely adopted in the design of mobile personal devices such as cellular phones and PDAs, often have operational problems due to different processing speeds between hardware and software components. For this reason, the interrupting or polling method has been used to transfer data between hardware modules and the CPU. Unfortunately, both interrupting and polling methods have their own problems when applied to mobile systems with very limited resources. In this paper, we present a new memory control method for image data processing system in a mobile environment that solves the problems of the interrupting and polling methods. The proposed memory control method has been tested on a FPGA target board and adopted in IMT-2000 mobile phones produced by Samsung electronics.
