STABILITY CHARTS FOR SIMPLE EARTH SLOPES

The discusser noted that charts presented by him (and referred to by the author) apply to critical ship circles whether they pass through or beneath the toe. They were prepared using the minimization program (referred to in the article) which determined the coordinates of the center of rotation and the value of the coefficient N sub x for critical circles. Charts were also given from which values of the coordinates and N sub x could be obtained. It is noted that if it is assumed that the critical circle actually passes through the toe, the resulting error in the factor of safety is not likely to exceed 2% for values of r sub u not greater than 0.5". This error is negligible in relation to errors from other sources.
