Efficiency Mapping of a Small Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor

This paper presents a simple method for calculating the efficiency map of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) from the motor nameplate parameters. The method is experimentally verified and the results are found in good agreement with the calculations despite the made simplifications. The method has been verified with a 23.5 Nm, 2000 RPM PMSM in the whole operation range of the motor. The method allows a device designer (traction applications, robots, production lines etc.) to calculate in advance the efficiency for a given driving or control cycle. Consequently, losses and cooling can be also calculated in advance.
