Low-energy laser trabeculotomies in primates.

An experimental operation system for performing trabeculotomies has been set up according to a theoretical analysis of laser trabeculotomy described previously by Goldschmidt and Ticho (1978) . ‘Punched-out’ trabeculotomies were induced in nine primate eyes, by means of a 0·5–3 mJ, Gaussian-shaped, nsec laser pulse utilizing a Neodymium laser at double frequency wavelength. Well-defined open trabeculotomies, associated with only minimal inflammatory reaction, were observed up to 41 days following Neodymium (Nd) laser surgery No significant rise in outflow facility was detected in the young and healthy animals, as was demonstrated by perfusion studies. The histological findings obtained after Nd Q-switched and argon continuous wave laser application to the angle are compared The potential application of this refined technique for the treatment of elderly glaucoma patients with obliterated sclerotic meshwork is discussed.
