Old problems: Adjectives in Cognitive Grammar

The problems" addressed in this paper have to do with the semantics of Adjectives. To keep the paper within manageable proportions, the discussion s restricted in the main to the example of the adjective old, in both its attributive andpredicative uses. Some of the problematic issues are outlined m Section L Section 2 reviews the ways in which two very different theoretical traditions have dealt with some of these issues. In the remaining pari of the paper, adjective meaning is discussed within the framework of Langacker's Cognitive Grammar.
