Model for predicting steel corrosion rates of concrete rebar over time

Predicting the service life of a reinforced concrete structure requires a model for predicting steel reinforcement corrosion rates.A theoretical and quantitative analysis of the electrochemical corrosion process for steel rebar embedded within concrete is described. The time dependent corrosion rate was predicted by a model.Accelerated corrosion tests of rebar under an artificial environment were performed as a test of the model. The measured values agree with the prediction of the model when the pore saturation of the concrete is less than 95%.The difference between model estimates and observed corrosion rates is less than 10%.
