Fine-structure transitions in collisions of Xe2+, Xe3+ and Xe4+ ions with He atoms

Transitions among ground and low-lying excited states of 6 keV Xe2+ (3Pj, 1D2) and 9 keV Xe3+(4S32/, Dj, 2Pj) in collision with He atoms are investigated by means of high-resolution (0.1 eV) translational energy spectroscopy. Over the energy range 35-400 eV of the electrons used to form the Xe ions, the measured fractional ratios of the states observed are smaller than the ratios expected on the basis of the statistical weight model. The measured energy values of the observed transitions are in excellent agreement with the corresponding spectroscopically determined energy values. However, a discrepancy of 0.7 eV between the present and the spectroscopic energy values for the transition Xe3+(2P32/2P12/) is found. Electronic transitions of the hitherto undocumented Xe4+ ion are also given and the fractional ratio of the two states observed, 1D2 and 3Pj, is measured at an electron energy of 150 eV.
