On the amplification of broad band jet noise by a pure tone excitation

Abstract It has been found experimentally that broad band jet noise can be amplified by a pure tone excitation as much as 6 to 7 dB. The jet noise amplification effect takes place at sound pressure levels which are present in real aircraft engines. The experimental investigation was restricted to a cold jet at high subsonic Mach numbers excited by a plane sound wave coming from inside the nozzle. Based on a simplified mathematical model an attenuator has been constructed which is able to reduce the jet noise amplification significantly.
