Nowadays wireless communication has become ubiquitous around the world and its application for gauging consumption of utilities by customers is rapidly gaining pace, not only in the developed world but also in the developing countries. To introduce this concept in the Sultanate of Oman, a model of Wireless Automatic Meter Reading System (WAMRS) has been developed, in which the wireless communication is based on IEEE 802.15.4 (ZigBee) standard and security is implemented by following the Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) protocol. Successful demonstration of WAMRS prototype has made it possible to be implemented in Oman on a larger scale for meter reading applications.
