Hand goniometric measurements using leap motion

In health care goniometry is used for diagnostic, prognostic, therapeutic and research purposes. In this paper, we present our proposed software called LeapAngles, that uses Leap Motion sensor to get goniometric measurements of the hand, such as Abduction of the Hand Fingers (AHF) and Flexion of the Metacarpophalangeal (MCP) Joint. To test the precision of the software, we carry out an experiment in which the measurements of AHF and MCP angles were taken by a physical rehabilitation specialist in ten young adults using a goniometer and LeapAngles software. Our preliminary results indicate that is possible to get hand goniometric measures, since the LeapAngles software get values of concordance between 0.51 and 1.00 in abduction angles, this means, that further work will give LeapAngles the chance to replace a traditional goniometer.
