Applications ofAll-Optical Signal Processing inModernOptical Communications

Theefficiency ofoptical communication system operation islimited bythelowoperation rate andrelatively complicated realization ofelectronic components. Thetransparent andfast optical signal processing becomes veryimportant forthemodemoptical communication networks inorder toovercome theelectronic "bottleneck". Inthis work, weconsider twoexamples ofall-optical signal processing based ontheunique nonlinear optical characteristics ofsemiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs). Wedeveloped atheoretical modelofall-optical logic gates based onquantum dotSOAs(QD-SOAs), whicharethemostpromising candidates forupto100Gb/s optical networks. We also proposed anovel method oftheall-optical automatic gaincontrol (AGC)ofErbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) based ontheapplication ofsemiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs).
