Role of D1 and D2 Dopamine Receptors in Pilocarpine-Induced Seizures

Both substantia nigra (SN) and caudate-putamen (CP) are brain regions documented to be involved in the regulation of seizure susceptibility (Gale, 1984). Nigral microinjection of gamma-amino-butyric-acid (GABA) agonists or antagonists respectively attenuates or potentiates seizures in several experimental models of epilepsy (Iadarola and Gale, 1982; Turski et al., 1986, 1987a). Similarly, pilocarpine induced-seizures convulsions are prevented by chemical stimulation of striatal cells but facilitated by lesioning of the caudateputamen (Turski et al., 1987b).
