Fuzzy Linear Programming

Linear programming (LP) is a mathematical technique for the optimal allocation of scarce resources to several competing activities on the basis of given criteria of optimality. In conventional LP problems, it is assumed that the data have precise values. However, the observed values of the data in real-life problems are often imprecise because of incomplete or non-obtainable information. In such situations, fuzzy sets theory is an ideal approach to handle imprecise data in LP by generalizing the notion of membership in a set and this leads to the concept of fuzzy LP (FLP) problems. In this chapter, we first classify the FLP problems with the fuzzy input data modeled by subjective preference-based membership functions, into several groups and then discuss the solution techniques for solving each group.
