This study examines undergraduates' understanding of some concepts in solution chemistry such as unsaturated, saturated, and supersaturated solutions; physical properties of solutions; and gas solubility. A diagnostic test concerning these concepts was developed and administered to 107 participants. Nine students were selected for interviews. Students' responses for the test were analyzed and percentages of correct and incorrect answers were calculated. Students' incorrect answers with the highest percentage were considered and discussed. The results revealed that a great number of the students were unable to apply their chemical knowledge to real-life situations. This study identified a number of misconceptions about solutions generated by the students. We suggest that the results can be utilized in research that develops teaching strategies to overcome students' misunderstanding.
