A perspective on GIS technology in the nineties

Information technology is a rapidly changing field and its innovative ideas and accomplishments will affect the design and use of future geographic information systems (GIS). In order to make some predictions about GIS technology for the remainder of this decade, it is necessary to assess the development of new technology. Experience shows that the development rate of new computer hardware tends to be underestimated; however, expectations about improved software systems are usually higher than what industry can deliver. Considering these circumstances, possible changes in GIS technology and its use are assessed.
