The Surgery of Deafness is Sultana and McKenzie's English translation of Portmann et al's second edition of La Chirugie de la Surdite. It is written in two sections: (1) surgery of the stapes and (2) tympanoplasty. Current concepts of physiology and anatomy of the middle ear from which the principles of the surgery of deafness have been founded are summarized in the first 36 pages, setting an excellent prelude for the theme of this book. In the next 200 pages, surgery for otosclerosis is discussed: the history, anatomy, physiology, and pathology, the syndrome of stapes ankylosis, the indications, techniques, and results of stapes surgery. The basic clinical aspects are unusually well handled, the important surgical techniques are discussed in adequate detail, and the results are well documented.
