Structural Response of R/C Slabs to Tornado Missiles

The most widely used methods of analysis, effective mass procedures, and time-history solutions are reviewed and compared to available experimental data. The comparison indicates that these methods significantly overpredict response. In order to reconcile these differences, new procedures are developed and compared to the experimental data. Two types of missiles are considered, penetrating and nonpenetrating. For penetrating missiles a time-history solution that considers the deformation behavior of the missile and the local behavior of the barrier is developed. For nonpenetrating missiles, a time-history solution that considers the deformation of the missile is also developed. These new procedures, along with the experimental evidence, strongly indicate that structural response is limited by the severity of local damage and that response does not increase indefinitely with impact velocity.
