Linear analysis of laminated composite plates using single layer higher-order discrete models

A higher-order shear deformation plate theory is used as a basis for development of the family of enhanced finite plate elements. The proposed single layered higher-order discrete model allows a parabolic distribution of shear strains through the plate thickness as well as a cubic variation of in-plane displacements. Numerical solutions obtained using new finite elements in static, dynamic, free vibration and buckling analysis are compared with solutions based on three-dimensional, classical and first-order shear deformation plate theories and it is demonstrated that the present model predicts a realistic global laminate response. The new results for composite plates should serve as benchmarks for future investigations.
