Passive matrix organic light emitting display is restricted to its passive driving method, so it is hard to make the screen size and resolution larger because the brightness is reduced with the row numbers and it needs a driver Integrated Circuit (IC) with high current supply. In order to make high resolution and large size Organic Light Emitting Display (OLED), companies invest much money to produce Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Display (AMOLED). But compared with AMOLED, Passive Matrix Organic Light Emitting Display (PMOLED) has simple fabrication process, which does not need very complex Thin Film Transistor (TFT) backplane and also has less material cost.
In this paper, we research the ordinary design of PMOLED panel, and finally, we found a novel design to diminish the dead space of PMOLED on the left and right sides. With that, we can stitch pairs of PMOLED unit together to make the PMOLED panel larger and have higher resolution. We also developed the manufacture process for this new type of PMOLED panel.
Using our novel method, we finally made a 3.5 inch PMOLED panel with a resolution of 160 (RGB) × 240 and developed the driving method for this sample using two commercialized PMOLED driver chip and Microprogrammed Control Unit (MCU) chip. So with the novel method, we can make many PMOLED panel stitched together to make larger PMOLED with higher resolution.
