Truck Accident Countermeasures for Urban Freeways

A recent Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) project identified countermeasures used to reduce truck accidents on urban freeways. Countermeasures directly related to the vehicle and driver were excluded, but included those relating to roadway design and operations, namely lane restriction, restrictive truck facilities, ramp treatments, tall barriers, urban inspection stations, increased enforcement, incident response and clearance, truck diversions or bans, reduced shoulder parking, differential speed limits, and mainline treatments. Of the eleven countermeasures, there was evidence of accident reduction in ramp treatments, tall barriers, and increased enforcement.
