On the computation of well-structured graphic representations in architectural design

Architects intensively use graphic representations to communicate their design ideas for themselves, between professionals, and others. The design drawing therefore, is an important medium to establish design support by means of computers. In order to make drawings accessible for computers, it is necessary to understand the conventions of depiction and encoding that architects use. "On the computation of well-structured graphic representations in architectural design" provides an overview of research by the author in this area. It is investigated how graphic representations are structured (Part One: Chapter 2 – Well-Structured Graphic Representations in Architectural Design), what these structures are (Part One: Chapter 3 – Identification of Graphic Units and Generic Representations), what their knowledge content is (Part Two: Chapter 4 – Typological Knowledge and Generic Representations), how they can be used to analyse design processes (Part Two: Chapter 5 – Analytical Technique of the Design Process), and how they can be applied in Computer Aided Architectural Design as intelligent drawing tools, by means of enhanced drawing tools (Part Three: Chapter 6 – Pen Plus: Building a Drawing Tool), and by means of automated drawing interpretation (Part Three: Chapter 7 – Paper Plus: Building a Graphic Unit Recogniser).
