The changing face of microvascular reconstruction

This review puts recent advances into perspective by first reflecting on what has not changed in microvascular reconstruction. New ideas that address old problems are presented. These include studies in flap physiology as well as new techniques for monitoring free tissue transfer using microdialysis to monitor flap metabolism. The major advances are in refining existing techniques. Tissue engineering, flap prefabrication, and transplantation are the areas in which major advances are most likely to follow. Advances in laryngeal preservation and flap prefabrication are presented. Experimental studies on tissue transplantation are presented. These set the stage for the clinical cases that are sure to ultimately follow. Curr Opin
