Biomass gasification in Sri Lanka

This article presents the current status and future potential of biomass gasification technology in Sri Lanka. It highlights the importance of biomass, especially fuel wood, as a sustainable source of energy. Reviewing government initiatives to create an enabling environment, it appraises key institutions involved in the development of the sector, such as R&D institutes, government organizations, gasifier manufacturers and fuel wood suppliers. It concludes that there will be a rapid increase in the demand for biomass gasifiers in Sri Lanka, mainly as a low cost option for thermal energy in industry and small scale off-grid electricity in rural areas.
