Control of earthquake excited nonlinear structures using Liapunov's theory

Abstract The present contribution is concerned with the hybrid control of earthquake excited high-raised buildings. The building is modelled as a shear-wall type structure with non-linear hysteretic restoring forces. A passive base-isolation is combined with actuators applied at the basement of the structure. A non-linear control law is designed following the theory of Liapunov. The proof of stability of this system with an infinite set of equilibrium positions is obtained by means of Liapunov's theory and by the invariance principle of LaSalle. The efficiency of the proposed control algorithm is demonstrated by computer simulations.
