A new thresholding technique based on random sets

We present a new technique for grey-scale image thresholding. Vital to this paper is the idea that each grey-scale image gives rise to the distribution of a random set. Our new thresholded set appears as an expectation of a random set generated from an image. This expectation is defined using binary distance transforms in such a way that the distance transform of the thresholded binary image mimics (in some sense) the average distance transform for varying threshold level.
