Fuzzy PI controller tuning for a linear permanent magnet synchronous motor drive

To improve the performance of a conventional PI-controller based linear permanent magnet synchronous motor (LPMSM) drive, this paper applies a fuzzy logic scheme for on-line tuning the PI controller parameters. The proposed method can be easily implemented, since it is based on the existing LPMSM control framework and does not require intensive computation, and is thus more appealing to current industrial practice. The dynamic model of a conventional LPMSM drive and the design of controllers based on the pole-placement technique are described first. The tuning of controller parameters using the fuzzy logic scheme is then presented. A performance comparison of the conventional PI and fuzzy-tuned PI controllers is provided for the speed- and position-loop control of the LPMSM drive. Experiments and simulation results both confirm that the proposed fuzzy-tuned control approach provides better tracking and disturbance rejection performance than the conventional one.
