Effect of Nitrogen Dioxide Inhalation on Blood Glucose Level in Albino Rat

The fate of inhaled nitrogen dioxide was studied with blood of albino rat. Nitrogen Dioxide is an oxidant air pollutant which induced pulmonary injury in albino rats. We evaluated the effects of 35 ppm and 70 ppm nitrogen dioxide exposure on blood glucose, serum total lipid and Glucose-6 phosphate Dehydrogenase (G-6PD) in albino rats for one hour per day for 15 and 30 days. A significant (P 0.05) increase was noted in blood glucose, serum total lipid and glucose - 6 phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6PD) after exposure to nitrogen dioxide in albino rats. These results suggested that stress condition caused by nitrogen dioxide inhalation seems to stimulate glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis inducing hyperglycemia in albino rats.
