The Système Hydrologique Européen (SHE) is a physically-based distributed modelling system developed by the Danish Hydraulic Institute, SOGREAH (France) and the Institute of Hydrology (UK). This paper discusses the nature of physically-based models and the areas in which they can fulfil a need for hydrological forecasts. A brief description of the SHE model is given and its structure is discussed in relation to the needs of a general methodology for physically-based modelling.
