A simple method for detecting valve stiction in oscillating control loops

Abstract This paper presents a simple and new method for detecting valve stiction in an oscillating control loop. The method is based on the calculation of areas before and after the peak of an oscillating signal. The proposed method is intuitive, requires very little computational effort, and is easy to implement online. Analytical results are derived to show the theoretical basis of the new method and field results are presented to show its effectiveness on real world control loops.
