Chess Hardware in Deep Blue

In May 1997, Deep Blue became the first computer to defeat a reigning world chess champion in an official match. This article reexamines the special-purpose chess hardware that provided most of Deep Blue's computational power and explores design alternatives made possible by new technologies for similar tasks.
