DENTAL BITEWING X-RAY IMAGE SEGMENTATION FOR DETERMINING THE TYPES OF TEETH

Dental image segmentation is the process to extract teeth features for identification. This study implements the dental bitewing x-ray image segmentation technique in three stages. The first one is the image enhancement phase, followed by the image segmentation phase, and the isolation phase. The enhancement method consists of the homomorphic filtering, adaptive contrast stretching based on homogeneity, and adaptive morphological transformation. Iterative thresholding is used for the segmentation phase. The binary image obtained is then processed to get regions of interest (ROI) using integral projection. Each block of ROI contains individual tooth and the block width can be utilised to predict the type of a tooth.
