Wavelet video transmission over wireless channels

Abstract In this paper, an error resilient, wavelet-based compression algorithm is studied for the transmission of images and video over severely band-limited, mobile wireless communications channels. An ATM-based transport layer is designed and then used to packetize the bit stream and multiplex the base and enhancement layers. The underlying communications system uses both direct sequence spreading and fast frequency hopping to provide an anti-jam capability. As a result of the hopping, noncoherent detection is used. The bit-rate available for video will generally be under 400 kb/s. To make good use of the channel, an effective trade-off between source and channel coding is sought. Convolutional coding is applied to the base layer, and Reed–Solomon coding is then applied to both layers to ensure that acceptable quality video is maintained.
