Design and analysis of an automotive vibration reduction system based on magneto-rheological elastomer

Most of the conventional vehicle suspension systems are passive isolation systems, which can't adjust their behavior according to the different road conditions. When the road conditions change, the vibration suppression effect will decrease. In the worse situation, some components of motor vehicles may be damaged. In this paper, a novel vibration reduction system based on a new intelligent material called magneto-rheological elastomer (MRE) was presented. This material not only has controllable, reversible, rapid responding field-dependent modulus, but also has good stability, which makes it an ideal material for smart devices with simple structure and low cost. The proposed system uses MRE as the adjustable element. The vibration reduction and shear modulus of MRE are controlled by the magnetic field. The parameters of the device are analyzed in the paper. The simulation results indicated that this vibration reduction system can effectively improve the vibration suppression effect.
