Thermotropic Liqid Crsytals II.: Transition Temperaturees and Mesophase Identifications for Some Anils

Abstract One hundred and seven compunds belonging to ten homologous seriesof aromoatic anils were synthesized, purified and analyzed by differential thermalanalysis and pahse contrast microscopy. The freedom of startng materials from homologous impurites was confirmed by mas spectroscopic analyses. The transition temperatures and tentative assignments of mesophse class as determined by texture observations are presented; plots of transtion temperatures vs carbon number are also given. An apparent correlation between monotopic behaviour and alkanolyocy-sublstitutionwas observed. Many compounds are polymorphic and p-phyenylendediamice derivatives demosttrate this to an extreme.
