It is important to know the control link bandwidth requirements because the control messages should be reliably transported and at the same time the capital expenditure must be saved. The implementation methods of the control link and the composition of the control protocol traffic flow are analyzed. And we introduce a practicable software simulation-based ASON network framework and node structure. Then based on this simulation platform simulations of the control link bandwidth requirements in ASON under different conditions is realized. Relationship between the control link traffic rate and the network traffic load of the ASON network is described. Relationship between the control link traffic rate and the quantity of the users in ASON network is described as well. The bandwidth requirements of the control link under different connection setup time limits are also analyzed. We also indicate that traffic blocking can significantly increase the control overhead. In the end the approximate equations to describe these relations are developed to help the real ASON network design.
