X-ray Microscopy

We should know little about the forms of material objects, large or small, were we unable to probe matter with radiation and interpret the consequences of their many interactions. Generally speaking, the evidence from a given radiation cannot disclose structural detail much smaller than the wavelength of the radiation itself, nor can information be readily obtained if the radiation is either too strongly absorbed or too easily transmitted by the object under investigation. It is primarily from these two basic considerations that the x-ray region, with its relatively short waves and wide range of penetrating powers, derives its interest as a promising field for the development of microscopy.
