Improving the dynamics of a synchronous generator by nonlinear stabilizers: a virtual reference direct design approach

This paper deals with the control of a synchronous generator. In spite of the system nonlinearity, the standard control scheme is constituted by time-invariant linear regulators, which do not provide a uniform behaviour over the entire working range. In order to improve its performances, we propose to add an additional feedback loop, constituted by a nonlinear controller, while keeping unchanged the existing set of linear controllers. An innovative technique is used to design the nonlinear controller, based on the identification of a model parametrized in the controller parameters.
