Detached Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Flow in a Highly Offset Intake Diffuser

Turbulent flow past an S-duct intake configuration was studied by means of Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations (RANS) and detached eddy simulations (DES). One of the main purposes with the study was to make comparative studies of the two modelling approaches for internal flows with separation in comparison with available experimental measurements. The computations were conducted using an in-house unstructured flow solver. A comparison is given for the results obtained with the RANS and DES modelling approaches. It is shown that the DES method has produced a flow separation bubble larger than that computed by RANS methods. The computational discrepancies and the reason behind the inaccuracies in the modelling are discussed.
