Necessary Condition for Optimal System Structure and its Use in Design of Interconnected Systems

Abstract A method is proposed for organizing the optimal interconnected systems with a set of the components available for system design. Interconnection variables are introduced to describe the structure of the system. Necessary condition of the optimal system structure is derived in terms of the interconnection variables when the behavior of the components is characterized by a set of differential equations. An iterative algorithm is given to design the optimal interconnected systems based on the necessary condition. The algorithm enables strict improvement of the system interconnection and the members of the system components at each iteration
